What happens after the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment?

After completing an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment, several important steps follow to help you access the appropriate care:

Step 1: Eligibility Determination

Your assessor will review your situation based on the assessment to determine if you're eligible for government-funded services such as Home Care Packages. This includes deciding which level of care best suits your needs.

This process occurs immediately after your assessment. The assessor usually needs a few days to a week to review your situation and make a determination based on the assessment results.

Step 2: Assessment Outcome Notification

You will receive a letter detailing the outcome of your assessment. This letter will confirm your eligibility and the type of care you can receive. It’s important to keep this letter as it contains crucial information about your care and funding options.

After eligibility determination, you should receive an outcome letter within 1-2 weeks, detailing the type of care you're eligible for and any next steps.

Step 3: Financial Assessment

If eligible for a Home Care Package, you may need to complete a means assessment to determine any fees you might need to contribute towards your care. This assessment is conducted by Services Australia and the outcome will detail the fees you are responsible for.

The process for receiving the initial fee advice from Services Australia typically takes about 3-4 weeks.

Step 4: Choosing a Provider

Once you know your financial obligations, selecting a provider can vary greatly in time. If you already have a provider in mind, this can be quick. Otherwise, it might take several weeks to research and decide on the best option.

Up to several weeks depending on whether you have a Provider in mind or if need to research your options, first.

Step 5: Care Plan Development

With your provider, you will develop a care plan tailored to your specific needs. This plan outlines the services you will receive, which should align with the goals identified during your ACAT assessment.

Developing a care plan with your provider should commence shortly after choosing them. This process can take from a few days to a few weeks, depending on the complexity of your needs and the provider's schedule.

Step 6: Ongoing Reviews

Your care plan and services will be periodically reviewed by your provider to ensure they continue to meet your needs as they change over time.

Please note that time frames can vary based on individual circumstances, provider workload, and specific regional processes. It's best to maintain communication with your assessor and chosen provider to get more precise estimates based on your situation.

Navigating the wait times for Home Care Packages can be daunting. If you or a loved one are on the waitlist, understanding what to expect and how to utilise this time effectively is essential.

Wait Times Overview

Wait times for HCPs vary significantly by care level:

  • Level 1: Less than 1 month

  • Level 2: 3-6 months

  • Level 3: 9-12 months

  • Level 4: 6-9 months

These estimates might extend, particularly for individuals with specific needs or lower priority status, with some even experiencing over a year of waiting.

What to Do While Waiting

  • Research: Thoroughly explore care options and providers to find the best fit for when your package is approved.

  • Interim Services: Utilise private or community services to manage immediate needs during the wait.

  • Preparation: Get your finances and home ready to accommodate the upcoming care services.
