Facing Sector Challenges Head-On: Sistability's Commitment to NDIS Service Amidst Industry Strain

Seven hands fist pumping in a circle

In its recently published "State of the Disability Sector Report 2023," NDS revealed a sector under immense strain. The findings highlight significant challenges faced by disability service providers, painting a concerning picture of financial struggles and service limitations.

The report indicates that 34% of providers experienced financial losses in the last fiscal year, the highest recorded since 2016, while 18% barely broke even. An overwhelming 82% faced service requests they couldn't fulfil due to insufficient pricing set by NDIS and difficulties in acquiring skilled workers. Workforce shortages remain a critical issue, especially in regional and remote areas, with 78% encountering severe challenges in finding disability support workers.

NDS CEO Laurie Leigh emphasised the severity of the situation, stating that providers facing losses while clients urgently need services signifies a failing market. Notably, some major providers have ceased NDIS services, impacting individuals with disabilities.

The report, based on responses from 432 providers, emphasises the financial strain exacerbated by reduced COVID-19 support. Additionally, it highlights the disparity in regulations, where registered NDIS providers face heavier burdens compared to unregistered ones, creating an unfair environment.

While welcoming the recommendation for an independent pricing authority in the recently released NDIS Review, Laurie Leigh stressed that broader sector reforms are urgently needed and cannot afford delays or incomplete measures. NDS has previously outlined its Top Ten Priorities for NDIS Reform, aiming to address concerns and push for effective, lasting changes in the disability sector.

With a commitment to leveraging their expertise and survey insights, NDS aims to drive meaningful reforms, advocating for changes that genuinely benefit both providers and individuals with disabilities in the upcoming period.

Amid these sector-wide challenges, Sistability, as a registered NDIS provider, remains dedicated to ensuring the continued provision of services to its NDIS clients. Despite the industry strains outlined in the report, Sistability is actively expanding its business and team. This concerted effort aims not only to sustain ongoing services but also to extend support to a growing number of individuals in need. Through this commitment, Sistability is striving to make a tangible difference in the lives of those relying on NDIS services, aiming to bridge the gap between demand and availability by scaling up its operations and resources.
